This is Los Angeles' moment. Grass-roots activism for issues like transit, density, sustainability and preservation has never been more visible. Yet a looming economic crisis will only exacerbate the challenges of pushing change through city government; a new creative force needs to step in with solutions and action. Buoyed by the election of a new president, a vision has buzzed throughout the local design community calling for the revival of the Works Progress Administration, which once employed designers and architects in service of their cities. GOOD Design LA is inspired in part by the WPA’s vision: We will activate designers with a similar call for design in service of LA. Through a series of events, designers will introduce their solutions for the city. Engaged local designers will be encouraged to help realize these ideas through subsequent Field Trips. Exhibitions held in the GOOD Space will serve as visual inspirations and historical reference. A community blog will connect the efforts, inform discussions about design as civic service, promote events and opportunities to design for LA, and highlight worthy projects by designers already in action.
